Illawarra Rugby product Steve Brandon has been selected in the Australian Rugby Sevens Squad that will compete at the upcoming Commonwealth Games in India.
Brandon, a Shoalhaven Junior, has been an exceptional attacking player throughout his junior career. He attended St Josephs College in Sydney where he thrived in the famed rugby nursery achieving GPS level in his final year before returning home to play for Shoalhaven in the Illawarra senior competition.
Earlier this year Brandon was selected for both the Illawarra Senior and U20’s sides that contested the NSW Country Championships and was a key player in the U20’s side that took the title.
He was then selected for NSW Country U20’s side and during this campaign was noticed by talent scouts at the ACT University North’s club where he has been playing for the past two months.
It was from his exceptional performances with the University North’s club that he was selected to trial with the Australian Sevens Squad.
Shoalhaven club and Illawarra representative coach Paul Mulready was full of praise for Brandon with his selection.
“Stevie’s success can be put down to his work ethic and his genuine enjoyment of the game” Mulready said.
“He has a great attitude and work ethic, and most importantly is a player who participates and contributes to the team environment and overall success” he said.
“I am really looking forward to watching Stevie’s career develop in the professional arena” he said.
