Kiama Rugby Sevens announced best ‘festival and event’ at South Coast Regional Tourism Awards

The Kiama Rugby Sevens has been announced as the winner of the ‘Festivals and Events’ category at the South Coast Regional Tourism Awards 2010.

“This is a terrific achievement for the Kiama Rugby Football Club,” said Mark Bryant, President. “Our committee works tirelessly to ensure a world class event each year and this is recognition of the standard we accomplish.”

The annual Kiama Rugby Sevens first commenced in 1973 and are held on the last Saturday of February. In 2010 over 4,000 visitors attended this major event.

“These visitors occupy accommodation throughout the area; visit our restaurants, clubs, cafes and eateries. Families attend with players and fans, who enjoy Kiama’s shopping and other attractions,” added Mark. “This generates a great deal of income for the local business community.”

In 2010 teams attended Kiama Rugby Sevens from the Sydney Basin, the Australian Capital Territory, North Coast, Country NSW, the Illawarra and Shoalhaven regions, Hamilton Island and as far away as Ha’ateiho in Tonga and Malaysian National. The Australian Sevens team also attended for the first time. “These teams also go back and spread the word about Kiama and what a great place it is to visit,” said Mark Bryant.

The announcement was made at the South Coast Regional Tourism Awards gala dinner on Wednesday 11 August, 2010.
Finalists will now proceed to the NSW Tourism Awards to be announced at Gala Presentation Ceremony and Dinner on Friday, November 19, 2010.
